The Holocaust in Serbia

INTRODUCTION

In June, 1942, SS Standartenfuhrer Emanuel Schäfer sent a telegram from Belgrade to Heinrich Himmler in Berlin, stating 'Serbien ist judendfrei.' Serbia is free of Jews.

Some 16,000 Jews had been living in the Yugoslav republic of Serbia in 1941. By war’s end, the Germans had murdered around 14,500 of them. Historian Emil Kerenji, whose was born in Yugoslavia, shares with us his thoughts on the genocide of Serbia’s Jews.
